The Choosing Wisely STARS Program is an initiative of Choosing Wisely Canada to engage second year medical students in grassroots, student-led campaigning that is aligned with Choosing Wisely messaging and learning.
Quality of Care NL/Choosing Wisely NL is happy to partner and help facilitate our local STARS in engaging with their peers and educators through learning opportunities that promote best practice.
Meet the STARS
Colin is a second-year medical student at Memorial University of Newfoundland with a strong interest in Public Health, especially in relation to health systems, health policy, and environmental health. Colin grew up in St. John’s and studied Geophysics at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He continued his education with a Master’s in Environmental Science at Ryerson University due to his interest in the intersection between environmental and public health. Colin’s interest in Choosing Wisely was sparked by the increasing calls for better utilization of our already strained health care resources, and he hopes to use the lessons learned from his time as a STAR to make an impact on our health care system.
Sarah Strong, BSc (Pharm) is a medical student at Memorial University of Newfoundland in the Class of 2022. Before medical school she worked as a hospital pharmacist, where she promoted deprescribing and antibiotic stewardship in her role as a hematology oncology pharmacist. Medical school has allowed her to appreciate the utility and broad scope of these guidelines in everyday medical practice. She is particularly interested in the incorporation of Choosing Wisely recommendations into current clinical practice at Eastern Health and looks forward to her upcoming role as student representative on the Choosing Wisely Eastern Health Steering Committee.
