The dangers of antibiotics overuse are obvious: we expose ourselves to more risk of harmful side effects and they encourage the growth of resistant bacteria which become more and more difficult to treat. It’s how we end up with outbreaks of MRSA and resistant strains of c.difficile and even gonorrhea.

Newfoundland and Labrador is particularly at-risk because we use more antibiotics here than anywhere else in the country. According to the 2016 Canadian Antimicrobial Surveillance System Report, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians receive 33% more described daily doses of antibiotics than the next-highest users (Saskatchewan).

We have to reduce antibiotics usage in this province.

Choosing Wisely NL is reaching out to patients and health-care providers to help start the conversation about reducing antibiotics use. In the coming weeks, you will see our public outreach campaign on TV, social media sites, and in print, as we try to educate patients in correct usage of these drugs.

But no matter how many ads we buy or posters we make, we cannot get this message out widely enough on our own. We need your help to spread the word about antibiotics.
